Indications/Uses
Adjunct in the treatment of partial seizures w/ or w/o secondary generalizations.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥16 yr 250 mg bid, increase as needed & tolerated in increments of 500 mg bid every 2 wk. Max: 1,500 mg bid. Childn 4-<16 yr 10 mg/kg bid, increase in increments of 10 mg/kg bid every 2 wk to 30 mg/kg bid; 6 mth-<4 yr 10 mg/kg bid, increase in increments of 10 mg/kg bid every 2 wk to 25 mg/kg bid; 1-<6 mth 7 mg/kg bid, increase in increments of 7 mg/kg bid every 2 wk to 21 mg/kg bid. Myclonic seizures Adult & childn ≥12 yr 500 mg bid, increase by 500 mg bid every 2 wk to 1,500 mg bid. Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures Adult ≥16 yr 500 mg bid, increase by 500 mg bid every 2 wk to 1,500 mg bid. Childn 6-<16 yr 10 mg/kg bid, increase in increments of 10 mg/kg bid every 2 wk to 30 mg/kg bid. Adult patient w/ impaired renal function Dose adjustment is recommended based on the patient's estimated CrCl.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levetiracetam or other pyrrolidone derivatives
Special Precautions
Monitor patients for psychiatric signs & symptoms; emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, &/or any unusual changes in mood or behavior. Somnolence & fatigue; coordination difficulties (ataxia, abnormal gait, or in coordination). Serious dermatological reactions including SJS & TEN. Avoid abrupt w/drawal. Significant decreases in WBC & neutrophil counts. Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. Higher risk of increase in diastolic BP in patients 1 mth-<4 yr. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy (3rd trimester).
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, weakness, unsteady gait, coordination problems, headache, pain, forgetfulness, anxiety, irritability or agitation, dizziness, mood changes, nervousness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, & changes in skin pigmentation. Depression, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, seizures that are worse or different, fever, sore throat, signs of infection, double vision, itching, rash, swelling of the face; psychiatric symptoms (w/ addition of pyridoxine).
